West Elm Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

West Elm Furniture Review

This West Elm furniture review found a varied customer response based on its research. On Trustpilot, they have a ranking of 1.3/5 stars with over 280 reviews.

Customers noted that there were issues with their delivery times, having reported delays or not receiving their orders. There are also reported issues with customer service, with buyers claiming the team was unhelpful in remedying problems or were unresponsive.

“I placed an order for a couch in early November. I am accepting of Covid delays, what I am not accepting of is the lack of customer service, lack of transparency, mixed messages and zero resolution when trying to figure out where the $2,500 couch I ordered is,” one Trustpilot reviewer wrote.

There are also continued negative customer reviews on a few of their Yelp pages. For instance, in their Californian location, they have 2/5 stars from 430 reviews on Yelp, and 3/5 stars on Consumer Affairs from 558 ratings.

While there are more reports of bad customer service and delivery issues, other buyers reported problems with the quality of their furniture. This complaint echoes a 2018 Vox article that described shedding sofas and cushions that didn’t hold their shape

West Elm Furniture Review

“They started leaking feathers all over the place, the cushions didn’t hold their shape. … 3 and half months later, I sat on one of the couches and the front beam snapped in half,” The author wrote, adding that “West Elm won over millennials. But now it’s really pissing them off.”

Not all customers are dissatisfied with their West Elm pieces. Slumber Search rates the company 7.7/10 stars out of 129 votes, and Influenster provides a 3.6/5-star rating from 166 reviews. Fans of the brand love the modern designs and were impressed by the quality. There were also limited reviews that reported positive customer service experiences.

Is West Elm Furniture Worth It?

West Elm Furniture Review

This West Elm furniture review is wary to recommend this brand due to the number of negative customer experiences. But, let’s go over the positives first.

West Elm has a wide array of furniture, home decor, wares, and furnishings that are all beautiful to look at. All of their products have a modern and contemporary feel that is very much on-trend.

Customers can shop through their sustainable furniture collection. It’s nice to know that a sizable majority of their items are environmentally friendly and ethically made. Another advantage is their room planner feature, which makes it easy to see how the furniture would look in the room it’s intended for.

However, it is hard to overlook the positives when there are several negative reviews. There are poor ratings across many credible websites such as Trustpilot and Yelp, which detail horrible customer service experiences and delivery issues.

The amount of negative reviews has reached the point where it becomes newsworthy, with poor ratings conveyed in several media outlets.

There’s still no harm in pursuing their furniture collection, but be on your guard. Based on this West Elm furniture review, a positive experience is hit or miss.

Shipping tricks and games
Asked by Ashlee Wlasiuk (4 years ago) Reply

Purchased a bed frame in Early December. It is now mid-March. Without an explanatory email or courtesy call-I have been shipped single bits and pieces of the frame over the course of 3 months. (Still missing key pieces) The ship-date keeps moving back in week intervals with no truth as to when the rest of it will actually arrive.

Post office doesn’t have it so that excuse is just a lie.

They have time to bombard me with advertisements literally all day- how about take a minute to tell me what is going on with my shipment?

Looks like covid has become an excuse to continue taking money from their customers with no actual intention of making the goods we’ve purchased. Just a bunch of smoke and games. I can’t cancel the order because I haven’t received it fully!

West elm terrible company/avoid at all cost
Asked by Ashley Taylor (4 years ago) Reply

I cannot begin to explain what an infuriating experience this has been with west elm. To be honest this is the worst experience I have had with any retail store ever. My husband and I have been patiently waiting for our custom made sofa for almost 5 months. If it weren’t for my husband’s persistent weekly calls and emails I’m pretty sure we never would have received any furniture. Not to mention every time he called he got the runaround and was told misleading information by multiple people. Our order was reportedly “cancelled” a couple times without our knowledge, on back order despite being told it was already being worked on, and the list goes on. Their vendors are terrible and it’s pretty much impossible to get a realistic update on what is going on. When the couch finally did arrive, not only was it dirty, but one of the legs was missing to a side of the couch so it won’t even stand up, and a whole half of the couch was allegedly lost in transit and was “unrecoverable”. Even worst, we have already been charged $5,000 for this furniture and each we time we ask for a refund, this request has been essentially ignored with offers to just remake the furniture or send someone out to repair the broken couch we received and try to recover the missing piece. This company takes no responsibility for its actions. It’s one thing to have to deal with a terrible company and ridiculously long wait times and actually receive quality furniture, but what we received was far from quality and quite embarrassing from a company like West Elm. I will never order from this company again, and I urge anyone reading this review to please save yourself the headache and frustration and your hard hard earned money and shop elsewhere. I thought something was off when there weren’t any reviews on their website and I wish I would have recognized that red flag. This has been an AWFUL experience. You can save yourself a lot of time by just googling “west elm reviews”.

This is the most ridiculous company I have ever dealt with. While their furniture is very stylish the quality is absolutely atrocious for the price. Customer service is a joke. Immediately after purchasing the Lucas Swivel chair we notified the store that it was defective. We were then told they would order parts and have them shipped to us do we could fix the chair. I was appalled. The chair was not even a half an hour old. The burden for fixing this chair was entirely on us. I would recommend never to purchase from this store. Their website is also beyond stupid. The website states store delivery is an option ,but when you place the order they tell you only ho,e delivery is available at a significantly higher price. I re be Jed and store delivery is still possible and the website states. Kerala that is for this chai? They take advantage of their customers. Horrible store.

Answered by Caralyn (4 years ago) Reply

Could not agree more. It is shocking they are the size they are. Inferior furniture, ignorant customer service reps. All they’re good at is taking money. Defective products are just bad luck on the part of the customer since their policy for standing behind their products is “ do nothing fir the customer”

Outdoor Portside Table a disaster
Asked by Marty (4 years ago) Reply

The tops of the table completed started to warp after about 3-4 months. They were going to replace it but instead accepted a return and still charged me the delivery fee. Hope this is helpful to someone else.

No "Harmony" at all
Asked by Sue (4 years ago) Reply

After spending quite a bit of time looking for a couch that was comfortable, in stock and ready to ship, I bought a Harmony sofa, and paid for the White Glove delivery service. Wasn’t real impressed with the delivery – I had to watch them and ask to not drop the cushions outside or bang the couch on the stair rail. After a day or two I noticed that the front edge of the liner underneath the couch was separated from the staples and was hanging under the sofa with a ragged edge. I filled out the customer service form on the West Elm website and got an email from Sutter Creek Care Center. They gave me the option of 1) a credit and I would have to find a technician and arrange to have it repaired myself (Seriously? Shouldn’t West Elm do that?) 2) have the couch taken back to the manufacturer for repair or 3) a flat out return. They could not tell me how long option 2 would take, if an exchange were possible, or if the sofa was even in stock. After I said I guessed the best option was to take the credit, I asked how does this affect any warranty or protection for future problems. I was told the sofa becomes “as-is”, and I am out of luck. At that time I said I do not want the credit but the rep said it was already processed. That was fast- almost like they wanted to pay me off as the easiest solution. Called the West Elm store for a lead and they referred me to their own “Furniture Care” department. Furniture Care could not arrange to have the sofa repaired and referred me to another upholstery company that they use called Furniture Medic. However, Furniture Medic was unable to help and sent me to yet another company. A salesperson at the store I purchased it from filed a case with management but I am still waiting to hear back. Not hopeful. Save your time and money and go with a company that stands behind their products.

Dreadul company and service
Asked by Brendon McDonall (3 years ago) Reply

I have purchased numerous West Elm products over the years.

Recently I purchased the Textured Hexagon Wool Rug. Absolute garbage they refuse to replace/exchange/credit.

West Elm has the worst reputation of any customer service anywhere – and I’ve now experienced it.

Go to Castlery, Brosa, Domayne, or any other mid-market competitor and you will get better quality furniture, not to mention better customer service.

Worst customer service experience ever!
Asked by Susan (3 years ago) Reply

Had an issue with being billed for a duplicate order. Multiple charges showed up in paypal. The associate was condescending insisting it was my mistake. Items weren’t even shipped. After an hour on the phone I was promised the “order would be cancelled and a refund issued”. Instead a new charge appeared in paypal. Had to block West Elm from paypal and dispute charges (except for legitimate charges).
