Tecovas Boots Review

About Tecovas

Tecovas is a high-profile footwear brand that specializes in handmade cowboy boots. Their objective is to deliver quality, timeless, and handcrafted pieces at a wholesale price. Tecovas’ western boots are engineered with modern technology; premium fabrics and materials; as well as, third-generation artisans who put it all together.

The following Tecovas Boots Review will guide you through the brand and its products with an informative and honest approach to ensure you make the right purchase decision.

Overview of Tecovas

It was just last year, at the end of summer, when my cousin asked us, his groomsmen, to wear cowboy boots for his wedding. To say the least, I was clueless. I had no idea where, how, or what to look for when buying a pair. Fast-forward to the present, and I love cowboy boots and you’ll see exactly why.

Tecovas was launched in 2015 by Paul Hedrick He quit his cushy job on Wall Street to pursue his passion for boots. Observations from his travels and research showed that the price and quality in the current market wasn’t balanced. So, he decided to invest whatever he had to build his company to what it is now today.

Now, I know Tecovas’ cowboy boots may not be the first style that comes to mind when purchasing shoes but hear me out. The brand favors a simple approach by modernizing the classic western design for a trendy look that keeps it ahead of the fashion game. Whether it’s for the casual-urban, trendy-rural, or adding flare to your fancier attire, these boots are impeccable. Don’t believe me? Read on.

I’m relieved to know that the brand steps up with industry leaders and crafts their boots from León, Mexico. Requiring an insane 200-steps to make a single boot by hand, Tecovas ensures their boots are the highest grade of quality for a detailed finish.

The coolest and most intriguing thing I find about the brand though is the insane materials they use to make their boots. Although the Tecovas boots for women come in a smaller selection than the line of Tecovas boots for men, it’s still quite impressive. Here’s a quick list of the types of materials they use:

  • Smooth Calfskin
  • Suede
  • Ostrich
  • Lizard
  • Caiman Belly
  • Alligator
  • Python

If you’ve done your research, then you’ll know that similar boots are ridiculously expensive. Thankfully, Tecovas’ western boots are guaranteed to be more affordable than the current market. How do they do this? Simply put, Tecovas’ cowboy boots are premium shoes that are sold directly to customers, so you aren’t forced to pay the hideous retail markups or get caught between competitor pricing.

Check out the rest of our Tecovas Boots Review for a breakdown on the features and benefits of their products. Below, you’ll find the pros and cons that summarizes their core values:

Pros

  • Handcrafted in León, Mexico
  • Simple, classic, and timeless styles and designs that are made to last
  • Cowboy boots that are practical for any look – smart, casual, and professional
  • Premium fabrics and materials from top to bottom
  • Cheaper than competitors and retailers
  • Free shipping, returns, and exchanges
  • Men’s and women’s available
  • Sizing chart available

Cons

  • Currently only available within the U.S.
  • Majority of collection is exclusively online with retail stores slowly emerging
  • Cowboy boots may not be for everyone
  • Selection of material for women is not as large as the men’s

Where Are Tecovas Products Made?

Alright, so where are Tecovas boots made and exactly how did they go about doing it? Well, as I’ve mentioned in the beginning of the Tecovas Boots Review, every pair of Tecovas’ western boots are handmade by a team of artisans in León, Mexico. Each group performs a staggering 200 steps on each boot to ensure perfection.

In addition to the absurdly detailed process, Tecovas’ cowboy boots use the highest quality of fabrics and materials from top to bottom. The main material with bovine lining and a stacked leather heel gives me the ultimate level of comfort and durability. In other words, a quality pair of boots like these will last you for years to come.

Tecovas Boots Review

The Dean

The Dean is everything I could ask for. The Tecovas cowboy boots pays homage to the traditional western look but takes a modern approach to the aesthetics for incredible versatility. The slim-cut shaft and the zipper opening makes it super easy to slip on and off.

I normally wear my cowboy boots with my trousers or jeans pulled over and doing that gives The Dean a fierce and sophisticated look for my casual or fancier attire. The pointed toe also gives it an extra edge that is comparable to conventional dress shoes. Not to mention, the calfskin leather delivers a genuine feel for unbelievable comfort that molds to the shape of your feet.

The reviews for The Dean are favorable with many of them praising the look, feel, and craftmanship of the boots. The Tecovas boots for men are a must-have for your collection and are available at $235.

The Townes

The Townes is anything but ordinary. If I had to choose a wild material for my pair of cowboy boots, it would be the American Alligator belly. Another short-cut, rounded-toe pair of Tecovas boots for men, these beauties are the brand’s newest flagship edition.

The alligator belly gives the Tecovas’ western boots a textured look and feel that stand out with your casual or formal attire. The bold and wild aesthetic of the shoes work with any color and are guaranteed to have you receiving compliments and why wouldn’t they?

These charismatic boots are alluring, and I can’t get enough of them. As tough as they look, personal testaments of these boots have shown that they’re easy to break in; get comfortable with; and last for years to come. Although the handsome pair is available at a price of $685, the investment is worth it.

The Lucy

Ladies, whether you’re a cowgirl or not, the Lucy is a stunning piece that’s essential for your wardrobe collection. I’m a fan of the brand for designing the gorgeous pair with versatility in mind. The short-cut, rounded-toe aesthetic makes the Tecovas boots for women perfect with shorts, dresses, and jeans; whether tucked in or not.

The Lucy features suede leather that is waterproof making it practical while delivering exceptional comfort and style for every season. Tecovas’ approach to the slightly flared shaft also gives volume and personality which you usually don’t find in conventional suede boots.

Tecovas has done a phenomenal job of updating the classic cowboy boots with a modern touch. Perfect all year-round, the Lucy is a fashionable choice that’s guaranteed to have you stand out. The Tecovas western boots are available at a price of $195.

The Casey

The Casey is a jaw-dropping pair of Tecovas cowboy boots that are an easy way to get creative and wild with any outfit. I’m amazed at how detailed and exotic the entire boots look. The texture alone brings out any ensemble to life whether you’re going for the urban-casual style or a fancier and elegant outfit.

What distinguishes the Casey from other boots is that the material is made with 100% lizard, single-piece vamp. Pretty crazy, right? I can bet you that no one at your next function will be able to top this. The features of the boots really showcase the blend of a western classic with contemporary style; proving your eye for fashion with this trendy pick.

These Tecovas boots for women stand up to the toughest conditions and are flawless for ladies looking for a bold and adventurous choice. The beautiful pair are currently available at $285.

Tecovas Boots Prices

When it comes to prices, cowboy boots are no joke. The more exotic the materials the boots are made of, the more expensive you can expect the price tag to be. However, as I’ve mentioned in the Tecovas Boots Review, the brand sells direct to consumer, so you aren’t faced with the outrageous marked-up prices. Below are some of the base-list prices for their collection:

  • Men’s Calfskin Boots – The Cartwright – $235
  • Men’s Suede Boots – The Roy – $235
  • Men’s Ostrich Boots – The Duke – $345
  • Men’s Lizard Boots – The Nolan – $495
  • Men’s Caiman Belly Boots – The Dillon – $455
  • Men’s Alligator Boots – The Austin – $695
  • Men’s Limited-Edition Python Boots – The Boone – $385
  • Women’s Calfskin Boots – The Penny – $195
  • Women’s Lizard Boots – The Casey – $285
  • Women’s Suede Boots – The Lucy – $195
  • Women’s Ostrich Boots – The Jessie – $355

Tecovas Boots Sizes

Boot sizes can be a major problem, especially if you’re ordering from a brand that sells predominantly online. Luckily, Tecovas uses Brannock Devices as their official size conversion chart. The method is a measuring standard for U.S. shoe sizes which makes it a hassle-free to ensure you get the correct size. However, there are some restrictions. For your convenience, I’ve comprised a list outlining specific details:

  • Tecovas boots run true to size
  • If you’re unsure about the size, order what you would for dress shoes or heels
  • If caught between two sizes, order the lower and remember that it’s natural for the material to fit snug at first before taking form of your foot
  • The material does take form to your foot, so if you’re between two sizes and you purchase a half-size down; the material will naturally take form of your foot
  • If you have a high instep, Tecovas recommends sizing up a width for men, or half-size up for women
  • Widths come in the standard D and wider EE for men; while for women widths come in the standard B and can be wider by ordering a half-size up

Where to Buy Tecovas Boots?

Retail

The good news is that Tecovas currently operate with two retail stores and there are more to come. Unfortunately, for international buyers, the brand’s retail stores are exclusively within the U.S. Check out the locations below:

  1. South Congress
    1333 South Congress Avenue
    Suite 160
    Austin, TX 78704
    USA
    512-675-4343
  2. La Cantera
    15900 La Cantera Parkway
    Suite 4450
    San Antonio, TX 78256
    USA
    210-547-8555

Online

Saddle up everyone because Tecovas is available online, for everyone. Their entire product line is easily accessible at their main website so you can browse through all their products.

Is Tecovas Products Available on Amazon?

Surprisingly, yes. However, you should be warned that the selection of boots is limited and concerningly overpriced. I’d stay away from Amazon and buy directly from the brand, either at their retail store or online.

Tecovas Coupons & Discounts

I’ve scoured the internet and, to be honest, I’m not surprised that I would come empty-handed. Tecovas’ prices are already significantly cheaper than their competitors for the quality that you get.

As of now, there are currently no coupons or discounts available. For now, the follow is the best that Tecovas has to offer:

  • Tecovas currently offers free shipping, exchanges, and returns on all online orders
  • 10% discount to active duty military, military retirees, and veterans

I returned a pair of boots that were to small did you receive them? I filled out the card and sent them back my order # 590135 FedEx tracked it it was delivered 2-14-20 around 9:45 am

I bought a pair and the heal was at a steep angle and unable to walk in them. The toes are TOO pointy, not at all like roper style boots should be. I see nothing anywhere to suggest any level of quality control in or out of Mexico. Boots really look good on their website, but once in your hand you discover nothing like the pics!

I’ve worn many boots back in the 80’s and 90’s. Tony Lamas, Justin’s and other brands. I have two pairs of Tecovas and plan to get several more. There is no doubt you will give all boot makers a run for their money.

Short sighted review, I actually ordered from Tecovas and was highly disappointed based on my overall fine boots selection in comparison. This article screams skewed from the get-go. The ‘cons’ are vague and wouldn’t even really count as negatives.

My wife has 2 pair and loves them immensely! Buy half size down.

I walked into the La Cantera/San Antonio store to browse in an area the size of my living room. There have been remarks about lack of service with this store, there is also overkill. My thoughts were interrupted 4 times by 4 different employees in a 5 minute period asking if I’d been helped. There is no way that they hadn’t heard the others asking prior- it’s as bad as Best Buy was 10 years ago. Not a single employee in this store had on a pair of Tecovas, and 3 of them were dressed like they were ready to go to work at the Aeropostale store. Boots look good, but I questioned why the toes of all their boots were dyed darker than the rest of the boot. Don’t care for it. The young lady I asked this could not explain why, but said you might be able to condition the boot to look the same color. I asked what that meant- her response? “You condition it.” Gee, thanks. Pass.

Went to their Omaha location. 20% that particular time. They were out of stock on 3 items we wanted. Did not offer to order or tell us when new stock would arrive. We emailed the home office. 5 days later, still no reply. Resent email, 3 days later finally a reply. Essentially “sorry…Omaha store does not replenish and we can’t order directly and get the 20% off the store was offering.”

It shouldn’t matter where a boot is made as long as the quality is good. A majority of the boots made these days are made over season. One well known company Ariat was bought by the same people who founded GAP and they moved production to China, Italy and Mexico. At the end of the day quality, comfort should be what matters. There are about 50+ Boot

Before I bought these boots online, I tried on a couple dozen boots in stores. These were far superior. I have a very high arch and needed to go up a full size. A great boot at the price.

I am unable to remove boots without assistance in some of my boots does anyone have any idea why I can remove some of them without assistance and other only with assistance? Is it the cut of the shaft or what?

Answered by Michele (3 years ago) Reply

It’s that area between the instep and the vamp that is snug. You have to get used to the “fit of a cowboy boot. It has to mold to the shape of your foot, and accommodate the width of your calf – without being too loose or too tight- but “snug” enough to stay on when you walk. They’re not like the fit of a regular designer boot.

Dishonest Company
Asked by George M (3 years ago) Reply

I refuse to do business with any company that is dishonest with their reviews. I sent back my boots even when I realized that they will not post reviews from verified buyers that are less than 4/5 stars. I left an honest review with pictures showing the discrepancy in marked sizes. It was not mean spirited or over the top. I did not bash the company at all but still it was not posted. When I called to ask why they had not published the review, they said that the department that reviews the reviews has not yet gotten to it, even though there were other reviews posted with dates after mine. I believed this for a week, then I called back in 3 weeks and got the same answer. It has now been 2 and a half months and multiple reviews have been posted for the same boots that I bought but mine was never posted. This was not an issue of them not seeing I was a customer as I bought both pair of boots directly from them.

I will never do business with this company again as a result. This is a dishonest practice and I am really surprised to see this company doing such things.

Bought Defective Tecovas Boots Unknowingly
Asked by Dan Davis (3 years ago) Reply

Disappointed. I was sold a pair that had a defect. I didn’t discover until I had worn them out of the store & then tried to buff it out at home…turns out it was a nick in the boot. Can’t believe they sold me a boot like that. I brought it to the attention of Tecovas & they offered to pay for professional buffing but the buffing didn’t resolve the issue. so I declined. I asked for compensation (hoping for 50% off the next set of boots) Sadly they offered a 10% discount (which I would get already as a military veteran). I even sent them a picture of the boot / nick which clearly doesn’t just happen to a boot.

Definitely surprised, thought buying a more expensive custom boot would provide better quality. Tecovas definitely disappointed me. Should have gone to a local sporting good & bought a pair 1/2 the price.

My fault overall, should have dissected the boots very carefully. Never thought someone would sell a defective product though….I guess it is too much to ask!

Beautiful and easy to break in
Asked by Dan Colburn (3 years ago) Reply

After buying a pair of ‘The Roy’, I loved the fit and look. I bought a pair of ‘The Zane’ during the Fathers’ Day special time, getting a matching belt for free. As I have a very high instep, I could not get them on at first. I used talc on my instep and heel and got in barefoot. I pushed up from the inside to stretch the instep, then got in with socks. I did the same again and, being very supple leather, this worked like a charm. They always fit like a glove once I got in. I recommend these boots completely.
